Saturday Apple Gleaning Cancelled

After much thought and prayer, I believe that the weather is not going to be good for gleaning tomorrow. I checked the weather this morning and we are supposed to get an inch of snow tonight and snow tomorrow. Plus, it will be very cold.

Maybe, you could take part in the turnip harvest next Saturday at Marker Miller at 10am - noon. Then lunch on the grounds and prizes for the children.

Let me know if this is something you would like to do.

I appreciate everyone's willingness to support this great work. We have had more events in the rain than I can ever remember. Everyone stayed out to finish the job. There is great dedication in this group. You are all special to me. I shall miss your company this winter, and look forward to the Hunger Summit in early spring.

I understand it is going to be cold!

I will let everyone know the status of the gleaming on Saturday morning after I get the latest weather forecast in the morning. I know it will be cold but the only problem I see now is rain. If it is to be a cold rain we will not glean.
That is not the same as gleaning in the rain - in warm temps.

We are set for the Marker Miller Farm at 9 am.

Upcoming Events - Oct 29 & Nov 5

Two events remain that need volunteers for this season.

Oct 29 - Some have canceled for this coming Saturday so we could use some extra volunteers.

9am 11 am Marker Miller farm apples
I will give the directions for the spot on Friday.

Nov. 5 10am - noon our 12th Annual turnip harvest and festival.
We will harvest turnips and glean apples until noon. then we will have lunch and give out prizes to the children. We will also be choosing the King and Queen of the turnip festival

Please let me know if you or your group will be attending. It helps to have some idea of the numbers, ( I need some idea of how much food to buy.)

Apples being delivered to ACT form the October 22 gleaning in Winchester. Many saw the story on Washington news of this food pantry having to close because the shelves where empty.
Now because of the community coming together, they are stocked and ready to open.

We heard of their need and were able to get the apples to them the same day we gleaned. Gainsville UMC answered the call and delivered them.

I was thinking about scheduling a gleaning in the middle of this week, then I heard they are calling for rain for several days.

I believe we can all get together on Saturday and do a good job..

We had groups from a great mix of faiths and civic groups this Saturday. All working side by side for the same purpose - putting fresh produce on someone's table, helping those whose lives are a bit rough right now.

I will try to thank those in groups (forgive me if I miss your group )Latter Day Saints, Lutherans, Methodist, Church of the Brethren, Scouts,Orthodox Greek church, Presbyterians,I am sure I have not got everyone together yet but I wanted to let you know what we accomplished so you could announce it tomorrow or when you meet.

These numbers are not final but are what I have now.

Gleaning On A Rainy Day On the First Day of October

Early this morning, we were sitting in the orchard, in the van, listing to the rain on the roof. Then the gleaners stared to arrive - a half an hour early. By 9:00 am there was a steady stream of vehicles arriving. They kept coming from everywhere -- Locals, Maryland, West Virginia,Virginia: Woodbridge, Harrisonburg, Springfield, WV,Arlington and many other locations.

I was kept busy just starting each group as they came. It rained most of the time but everyone kept working.. I saw the piles of bagged apples kept growing and wondered if the truck I had asked to come would show up. Just as we finished it arrived.

We sent 4500# of apples to several locations locally and to WV,and Arlington.

I don't have an accurate count on volunteers for this morning. Do know I washed up 91 buckets so maybe nearly a 100 came together in the Marker-Miller Orchard to feed hundreds of people today, despite the wind and raw Fall air.

Next week
I have a gleaning scheduled October 4, but will not need extra help. A group from Mary Baldwin College is furnishing the volunteers.

Wednesday October 5, 9am I would like to glean at the Marker Miller farm.
Just come to the market area, unless you hear otherwise from me.

Saturday October 8, 9 am We will be gleaning somewhere on the Marker Miller farm
I will let you know where, sometime Friday.

Joy of Gleaning

This is the joy for today's gleaning.

Eloisa came with Brother Woodson of Noah's Ark to take apples back to DC for the homeless. As I talked with her she stated she was so excited. She had never seen an apple tree or tasted an apple in her life! She is from Venezuela.

Later I called Brother Woodson and they had already given the apples away - about 600 10lb bags. Just hours after they were gleaned. Eloisa kept repeating to me that she loved us and was so grateful for people who care.

Results of 9/24 Gleaning and Future Dates

No rain!! What a beautiful day we had for gleaning.
I especially enjoyed all the children who came out. They were so excited and worked very hard.

We had 147 sign in and that did not include all the children. So I am guessing we had about 200 volunteers total. God is good. Everyone was very supportive to me and that helped a lot.

There was a total of 7,280# of beautiful apples gleaned. Most went to Noah's Ark out of DC. Brother Woodson takes these to the homeless and hands them out directly to them. They will be enjoyed today. Most of these people don't know when they will have another meal. I can't imagine how they fell to receive a bag of those apples, knowing they will have something to eat for several days.

A nice load went to Page One in Luray. Luray really needs help also and we are glad to be there for them.

Our Oct. 4 gleaning will also go to Page One . Our gleaners are coming from Mary Washington College.

There will not be a gleaning on Monday. The rain slowed the picking so Cline is not ready.

Gleaning on Wednesday Sept. 28 is 9 am at Marker Miller
We need volunteers for this one We have a group from Hill's school 3rd and 4th graders. So it would be good to have some extra hands that morning. Come to the Market area or the drive before, which ever has the pink sign .

We just got back from picking out a spot for tomorrow. We are not going to cancel because we have so many to come and the apples are nice. If you can don't mind a shower then plan on coming. Bring a poncho and rain hat. I will have the boots and donuts.

Maybe it will quit before then and be beautiful. Come to the market and drive on past ......follow the pink signs.do not park at the market. You will go past the pigs. and up over the hill. We are in the same area as last week.

We had a great day today. A lot of volunteers from the city who had rain all week and drove 2 hours to get to the Shenandoah valley to see it's beauty. They all had a great time and gleaned over 1,700# of plums. We have now finished the plums. I am really excited about all the folks who will have fresh fruit on their table from this week long effort.

in the back 40 acres!

Come to the first entrance and follow the signs for a long way.
It is so beautiful and peaceful back there. Everyone really likes this place.

They have only that area harvested so we should be able to get some fresh apples.

There should be good apple gleaning from now on.

Desparate Need for Volunteers Frida 9/9/2011

We need 20-30 volunteers for tomorrow Friday 9am until 11am
Marker Miller farm.

There are many many more plums to get off the trees. There was not enough hands this morning to get them all. They are hanging on the limbs in clusters.
The rain is starting to crack them and I don't think we should leave them for Saturday.We worked about two hours before it started to sprinkle.

I believe we gleaned over 1,500#. At the price of plums in the store think what that will mean to those who can't buy produce.

We will be out there at 9am in the morning hoping to do the same thing.

If you are available to help, it would be great. This is the easiest gleaning you can get.

The sign is for his customers and it is to protect the children who may be on the cow train or walking to the orchard. Please respect the privilege and drive slow.

OK! What a week.
You people are amazing. We are making a big impact on the area. Folks are starting to notice our work, and that will get more involved.

I wanted to let you know something about gleaning for next week before your church tomorrow.

This is what I can say for now.

If weather is bad you need to check your email as always. I always get up real early and send a notice if we are canceling. Usually by 6:30 am

just keep going and following the signs.

I thought with the cooler weather we could start a little bit later.
It's a good sized patch of corn so I am sure we can use a lot of help.
I am always amazed that as soon as we run out of gleaning..something else turns up

I just got a call from a farmer who has 50+ bushels of tomatoes that he is giving us in the morning. A whole skid and maybe more! This will be good news to those pantries that give out tomorrow.

Gleaners were busy this past week with peaches and sweet corn. The Winchester district gleaned and delivered over 28,000 servings of good food to those in need.

We finished before it got too hot and there was a lot of corn.
over 3,200# Went out to those in need. We sent to West Virginia and Front Royal, Woodstock and the Winchester area. We are trying to share with all those who are requesting produce. We had some new gleaners from Pikeside UMC . Thanks everyone.

This week is going to get hot so we want to get the other corn out right away

Wednesday 7am Cline's Farm Corn. The more help we get the sooner we can all get in out of the heat. Please try to come.

Bag cutting and tying. This is something everyone can do.

Sorry but I got out and checked and it is raining .A cold rain. I do think it is freezing rain. I am thinking about those who are traveling and I want them to be safe.

Dress warm!
I plan on gleaning if the weather permits. I will be out there about 9am. Directions are at
markermillerorchards.com We will not be at the market site. We will be at the same place we were last Saturday.

Come out Cedar creek grade..about 2 1/2 miles.
You will come to the crest of a hill and as soon as you come over there will be the drive.
I plan on putting up a pink sign at the crest of the hill to warn you to slow down.
Note: if it is just calling for scattered showers, we won't cancel, but if I believe it was calling for the weather to be much like today. We did not have any rain after early morning. Sure hate to miss all those good apples if we don't have to.

I will cancel by 6:30 am if need be.

Tomorrow Saturday October10...9am--(or as scheduled) Take note of these directions, This is the spot I believe we will be in. Marker Miller farm: Exit 310 off I-81, North on Route 37 to Winchester/ Opequon exit, Turn towards Opequon (left), continue almost 3 miles.......(You are not going as far as the farm market) Keep a look out for our bright pink signs on your left. I will have one at the crest of a hill. This is your warning to slow down. Just over the hill, you will be making a left turn, there will be a sign there also. Follow signs to the sight.

Monday Columbus day Marker Miller farm. 9am As of now I believe we will still be at the site of Saturday's gleaning. Just follow the directions above. If I need to change the site I will let you know. Either way, we will be at the Marker Miller farm.

Sept 5 Update

Boy! did you all whip through that field yesterday.

We finished the whole area assigned to us and on time! If I have all the figures, we did 3,285#. That amounts to almost 10,000 servings of food. Where else could we have done that in two hours? All this was accomplished by 16 volunteers.

There is no shortage of food to be gleaned. This is the list of gleanings for this week and the first of next week.

You people did it again!

Today we gleaned and bagged more corn than ever.

A total of 552 bags ....4,968# ...or 14,874 servings of food. We are making a difference.

The weather was hot and trying but you all stuck it out to the end of the rows. I am so proud of you all. You are a special group of caring people.

I did mention that there may be something on Wednesday of this week but that will not happen.

What a day, again! We had a new congregation to come this morning and they gleaned green beans. 125# total. New Life Christian church thank you!

Burnt Factory UMC harvested their potato crop... that they plant for us. The total pounds for that was 3,500#. Way to go! People really love potatoes and these were extra nice.

Last but not least, we gleaned apples with a group from Russia. We had arranged with them to spend part of their time in this country with us and it worked out great. They were teens.

It was already hot when the arrived and that did not bother this group. They got their instructions via interpretation.... i wonder how that came out with my WV accent? I probably don't want to know. We had a blast. After we shared a picnic lunch and this was funny, at one point i said something and a young lady thought I understood their language. Maybe she was from West Russia.

All said and done we had a great time and I learned some things about caring people. they come from everywhere.

Aug. 11 Update

First of all...Thanks for yesterday!

I do believe it was a record for corn gleaned by us. 30 volunteers gleaned and bagged 4,185# of sweet corn. Everyone with a truck helped haul the corn to agencies. The weather was very hot but we were able to finish the area assigned to us.

Pass the word around that we have more corn on Friday Aug.14 8am at the Cline farm. If we can get extra volunteers out that day , we can get it finished before it gets hot. If you or someone you know has been wanting to come out, this would be a good time to join us.

Saturday Aug 15, 8am We will be at the Marker Miller farm. Not sure what crop yet but Mr Marker said he would have something.

Monday Aug. 17

I am setting up this date for the Cline farm 8am If that should change I will let you know on Friday. I know we have more corn and peaches but not sure which it will be. If you need directions to either just let me know.

Thanks to everyone who came out this morning to help with the peaches. They were so big and juicy that we really had to be careful handling them. 1,960# have been delivered! When I get some time I will give you a count on the total pounds of peaches for this year. I understand that we have two more runs on them at Cline's.. Will let you know when.

Tomorrow we are going to plant our turnips. Please pray for the crop ..the ground....the farmer and everyone who helps to harvest it. The turnip festival is always a great way to end the season with lots of fun for everyone and a great day of sharing in the work we do.

Please take note there are changes!

We are not going to the Marker Miller farm on Saturday Aug. 8. I just spoke to him and we are in between the crops and nothing will be ready.

We do plan something there next Sat. but I am not sure what.

I have small jobs the rest of this week, but will only need several for each event.

As it looks now we may be gleaning corn Monday I will let you know before the week end so you can make your plans.

We are off to a good start for the season and hope the momentum keeps up.The need is really great and we are making a difference.

July 28 Update & News

What a day! And yesterday also. We finished yesterday and then got a call to pick up 150 Dozen eggs, We did and delivered them.

We just got in and I wanted to let you know that tomorrow we are Cline's and it is corn for sure.
We ran out of boxes and it took me hours to find enough to finish.

I have hopes that someone will take an interest and help with the box situation. If not God is our supply and it will get done.

This year we are having so much more because of the hail damage.

I was finishing up with the last load and I got a call to come pick up from a new farmer.

I hope that some of you will be able to come tomorrow. I may not be moving too fast, but I will try.

We always have fun and help those in need. Can't be doing anything better.

Thanks to everyone who came out to help this morning. We had enough volunteers to finish all the beans. We really have busy week coming up and I hope that you can make it out to some of these events.

get off the ramp and turn left. Go over the Bridge and you will see us on the right. i will have a pink sign out.

Tuesday we have some salvage work to do but only need a small group. I will just call several volunteers.

Wednesday July 29 we are back at the Cline farm. We will either be doing Peaches or corn, I won't know until Monday which one for sure.

Thanks to everyone who came out and helped with the peaches on Monday. We have been picking up a lot of produce and delivering it this week.. and will be doing so again today and tomorrow. We have really been blessed this summer with lots of cucumbers and squash.

Please check your calendar I just found out the we have sweet corn for Monday July20 - 8am the Cline farm. I advise a long sleeved shirt and long pants maybe a sleeveless shirt under neath so you can remove one if you get warm.

Note: We are going to try 8am for a while to see if we can get finished before it gets too hot. If need be we will go to 7am as we did last year. I know that some of the volunteers liked that and I will talk with some of those (who help on a regular basis ) to get their thoughts.

Due to a hail storm, Farmer Cline's crop of strawberries was destroyed. There may be some berries to be picked. If you can, picking will start at 7:00 am at the Cline farm.

The gleaning season is almost upon us. Now is the time to get those picking muscles tuned up, as we're sure to have much to glean this year, as in years past.

What a beautiful day the Lord gave us!

We had a great turn out of volunteers and a lot of new people.
It was so good. Eddie had everything laid out for us when I got there.
All I had to do was help get everyone in place. The total of apples was 14,700#
The apples were beautiful and everyone who came was ready to help, to the end.

We know how desperate the times are and this was an unexpected bounty. God is looking out for those in need. And we are blessed to be part of it all.

14,700# means that over 44,000 servings of food are going to be on tables within the next two days.

If you know anyone that would be interested in helping with the gleaning this season, please tell them that every effort is making a difference is someones life.

I run in to people every day that have no food in their house.
We can change that with a small amount of effort.
Each of you have friends and each of those friends have someone they know in need.
Help me spread the word, and the bounty.

Surprise! Surprise! Apples are available

We have Apples!
We have been blessed with a gift of apples from the Richard farm. There are 14 big bins full just waiting for us to separate and bag.

We will be bagging them

Saturday April 18, at 9am.. Hopefully we will be finished by noon.
You are welcome to come and work an hour or two.. as you are able.
Rain or Shine!!!!!!!!!!!! We will be inside, if it is raining.

What a great thing for us to be able to send out local apples to those in need, this time of year. I hope that many will come and we can get the job done in a short time. I will be contacting agencies to take then ,so we can do it all at the same time. Please let me know if you can make it to this event.

Pictures from the Celebration

We had a large crowd for the celebration which was very heart warming.

Thanks to the talents of Jodie and her daughter, as well as the hard work of Rick, the crowd had plenty to share due the blessings of God's bounty.

Fran Rickets, director of CCAP was one of the many speakers who reminded the gathering who desperate the need is for food for those who are struggling, especially as the economy has left the marginalized behind.

Brother Watson from Washington DC shared with us the need in the city, as well as how God has called us in Scripture and through the life of Jesus to serve those who have less in our society.

We were greatly blessed by God's use of the many who gathered to celebrate last year's gleaning efforts, and to move into the new year of gleaning so that the efforts of the Society of St Andrews Gleaning Network reach as many people as possible.

Yesterday, a large number of supporters of the Gleaning Network of the Society of St Andrew gathered at Lord Fairfax Community College to celebrate the past year and to encourage one another to continue to support this worthy effort, especially as the need is increasing at such an alarming rate.

We enjoyed the event so much last year that we wanted to offer it again. This is a time the volunteers, growers and agencies can be together and celebrate our work. A Lesson in the Field In July Heat

The July heat was relentless. I had to deal with that and the fact that some college students were coming from North Carolina to glean and could not get there until the sun would be making the field of beans very uncomfortable.

Some of the regular volunteers had been at work for a while when a group from a Hispanic church showed up to help. The group included the pastor and her mother, several people from their church and some of the pastor’s family.

The college students finally arrived and I asked them to work with us, but instead they wanted to go to the other end of the field and work. I thought this strange but gave them the ok. I would go back and forth between groups and make conversation as we worked.

I had noticed a teenager with the Hispanic group, sitting in a pickup. Some of the younger children were carrying him bean vines and he would pick the beans and drop the vines on the ground. I went about taking pictures and picking beans, just praying for the time to come to get out of the heat.

Upon one of my return trips to the Hispanic group I was taken aback. There on the ground was the teenager who had been in the truck. He was on the ground picking beans. He was showing a huge smile as I passed by. This young fellow had no legs. The other children were bringing vines to him and he worked very fast to harvest the beans. I later learned that his family does this for a living, moving around the country harvesting fruits and vegetables.

I called everyone to the station for refreshments and pictures. I could see the looks on the college student’s faces as they realized the sacrifice this young man had made to be there. As they departed to return home I knew that we had all learned a lesson this morning about caring for others. The heat of this day is not what I will remember. It is the real giving of oneself that I shall recall.

This is the pumpkin patch at Market Miller Farm. Before tackling the turnip field, many of the kids went to the pumpkin patch.

This is yours truly and the winner of our largest turnip contest. This one weighed in at 7 lbs. That will make a lot of soup (my favorite way of eating turnips).

This is the "Queen of Glean" in the Shenandoah Valley, Ms. Betty Heishman. She is holding more than 13 lbs of turnips.

Wednesday we have one more opportunity to glean apples at the Marker Miller farm.

10am till noon. Come to the gravel lane before the main entrance. There are lots of apples under each tree. We were there Saturday and could not begin to get them all. You can easily fill a bag without moving from one spot. If we have twenty people show it would be could make a good day of it

We could have something else this week end so watch your mail. I will let you know as soon as I find out anything

Gleaning Friday and Saturday, Nov. 7 & 8

Gleaning Friday Nov. 7, 10:00 am

I went to the location yesterday to see what was there. We have been offered a long row of mixed lettuce. Very nice quality. It would be a shame for it to freeze.The farmer also offered us a row of mustard greens.These are also high quality There are no weed to deal with and the crops are on plastic so they are very clean.

This is a new farmer and I would like to do a good job for him. It would be nice to be invited back to provide these nice crops to the area needy.

Directions:
Take route 37 north to the Berkeley Springs exit (522). At the light turn left on to 522( away from Winchester). Continue 2 miles. Go past the Virginia farm market, 2 churches and watch for a tent on the right. I will have our pink signs on the right where you turn in..

Bring a sharp knife !!!!!! I would love to know if you plan on being there

We will have apples at the Marker Miller farm on Saturday.
This will be one of the last apples gleanings this season and we are happy to provide this extra event. Come to the market and follow the signs. We may be using the first entrance to the market I am not sure yet .When I know for sure I will pass that info. along. Some of you requested another Saturday gleaning so this is your chance. The weather is supposed to be nice. Hope to see you there

I wanted to pass this note along. As you know this has been a great growing season and we have really attempted to go out every time we could. Even at that we are not filling the need as we should. The times are really challenging now for many people, people who have never before had these struggles. I am sure that each one of you knows someone who fits in this picture.

I am asking you to talk to a friend or neighbor about the need and encourage them to come out next season to be a part of this great mission.You are a special group of people who really know how to make a difference.

Turnip Harvest Report

We had the biggest turnip harvest ever on Saturday! Almost 8,000# of turnips and 4,000# apples and 1,300# pumpkins.Over 200 volunteers were scattered out over the farm and in just two hours gleaned all the food. We gleaned twice this week 3,000# more apples. All the food has been delivered.

There was a good feeling in the air on Saturday. The children had fun along with the work. The largest turnip weighed in at 7#. I hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as I . The weather was perfect and we were blessed. Thank you so much for all your help and support. Each one of you made it work.

Please read carefully this is a different spot!

I-81 north (from Winchester) to the Clearbrook exit 321 turn right off the ramp. Go to the stop sign at Route 11 (Citco station on corner).

Turn left onto route 11 ( North). Go about 1 mile to the first road on the left - Cedar Hill. Turn left on to Cedar Hill and go 1-1/2 miles to Brown road. Turn right onto Brown Road. You will see a cell tower in the orchard on the left. We will be there. I will have the pink signs along the way. Hope to see you there.

Turnip Harvest/Festival Nov. 1

Please tell your friends that we are harvesting the turnips on November 1, 10am till noon Marker Miller farm

We will harvest turnips, pumpkins and apples. The first stop is the pumpkin patch ( a half hour here would be good for the little children ) then on to the turnips. If you or your group would like to glean some apples, they will be next to the turnips.

As usual there will be prizes hidden in the turnips for the children to redeem
This year we will also have them in the pumpkin patch.

We will not redeem the prizes until 12 noon. At that time everyone will meet at the turnip patch for food and celebrations of the gleaning season.
We are looking forward to this harvest and special time of celebration with our friends from the gleaning network.

I just realized that this coming Saturday is the last big gleaning of the season!

If your group has not been out or wants to come out again, just let me know.
There are going to be lots of apples and there are more people asking for them than we can provide for. Even if your group is small in numbers we can make a big difference.

Yesterday there were only five of us but we gleaned 1,000#. We are cleaning up the pick your own orchard in front of the market. The apples are huge and a bag fills up fast. We have a group of home schoolers coming and would love to have some of our regular adults. If you are available we would like to see you..

Wow ! what a great gleaning day we had yesterday. The air was brisk and the apples were beautiful.

123+ volunteers gathered and bagged 6,190# of Rome apples. All have been delivered and should be on tables today. Thanks to everyone who helped make the day a success.
Our apples went to Fredericksburg, Herndon,Washington, DC and Arlington. Please pray for our mission in the following weeks. We have much food to save and every hand is so important. Below is the schedule as I have it now. I hope you can find a time that works for you.

We are planning on a gleaning Tuesday and probably one on Thursday of next week.

We only have several weeks of good gleaning left so if you have not made it out this fall, now is the time. We really need volunteers during the week day gleaning.

You might also want to announce this on Sunday. We are planning on our turnip harvest Nov. 1 ....... 10am until noon. The turnips are growing and should be ready by then. I have not announced this until now because we were not sure if they would be ready. November 8 would be the rain or mud date.

Columbus Day Week Gleaning

Yesterday was great! I don't have the final total of pounds yet but it was well over 7,000#. That means 21,000 servings of food are now on the tables of those who do not have enough. Thanks to your effort You have made a difference.Yesterday, I felt a great out pouring of caring was with our volunteers.

Let's start at 10am. The grass and trees are so wet early .

We will be at the same location as Saturdays gleaning..

This location is 2 3/4 miles out the Cedar Creek grade on the right side of the road. After you come 2 1/2 miles ........slow and as you come over a hill. A gravel road will be there. if you are going fast you will miss it because you can't see the entrance until you pop over the hill. As usual follow the pink signs to the parking.
Keep following the signs until you get to the parking sign.

Tuesday October 14, 10am

Kernstown
Some of you may remember this last year. The apples are in the back yard of a home. The owner is caring for the trees and giving us the apples.
We will pick from the trees . if you can't stoop, this is your chance to glean standing up!

We will park around the circle and not in the yard.

Directions: From route 11 at Kernstown, VA .Turn at the light at Apple Valley road
Go past the GE plant and the road will fork. You will go left on Shady Elm. Follow this across the Route 37 bridge and past the Hockman farm on the right. Turn right on Hockman court. You are going to the last house on the left. 191 Hockman court.
I will have the pink signs out.

If you get off route 37 at Kernstown Just go towards Winchester on 11 and turn left at Apple Valley road.

I do have a request ::: If you have a truck and would be available to deliver some produce Monday or Tuesday. Please send me and email to let me know .
It would be a great help to know we have enough transportation I never know how many trucks we will need. Depends on the produce and the amount of volunteers who show up

Saturday October 11 we are gleaning at the Marker Miller farm

We will be at another location on the farm. This location is 2 3/4 miles out the Cedar Creek grade on the right side of the road. After you come 2 1/2 miles ........slow and as you come over a hill. A gravel road will be there. if you are going fast you will miss it because you can't see the entrance until you pop over the hill. As usual follow the pink signs to the parking. Keep following the signs until you get to the parking sign. If your group is signed up to come you already know what time you are to be there.

All others come at 9am.

We have gleanings planned for October 13, Columbus day,
at the same location as Saturdays gleaning follow the directions above for that.
We have more coming next week and I will be sending Tuesday's gleaning directions over the week end. It will be at Kernstown.

We gleaned two farms yesterday and had a total of 8,719# of produce.
This means that 26,157 servings of food ( that would have wasted) is on the way to tables in Winchester, Washington, DC , Gainsville and Luray . You have made a difference in the time it would have taken to watch a movie, you have changed many lives by caring. - Betty Heishman

A Gift From A Grandmother

Last Saturday, I was in a corn field, gleaning for the Society of St Andrews. We were thankful to Farmer Cline, who shared his bounty with us many times this year. The Shenandoah Valley group was also blessed with the many that came to give their hands, feet and backs to the effort.

Among the last to come out was a young couple. I was fascinated that they had came to the valley from Arlington, which meant about a 90 minuted drive to come into the fields to pick corn. So I asked how they came to be there on that Saturday morning.

Tracy, the young woman, explained that they first heard about the Society of St Andrew when her grandmother as a Christmas gift to them gave a donation to the Society of St Andrew. The found out a more about the society from the Internet. Then when they wanted to give her grandmother something back for her birthday they contacted Betty Heishman, the Shenandoah Valley coordinator in Winchester.

This was a gift that kept on giving. Thank God for grandmothers.
